DOZENS of families were ordered to stay in their homes and keep their doors and windows shut as fire swept through a nearby factory. Foul smoke billowed into the air above Walker, Newcastle, as the blaze tore through the workshop of Parker Hose and Fittings Ltd, on Fisher Street.
More than 36 fire fighters from eight fire trucks battled for three hours to extinguish the danger and keep flames away from two potentially explosive acetylene gas cylinders inside the plant.
It is understood up to 20 less dangerous cylinders were also housed in the burnt-out building.
Today the area around the gutted factory remains cordoned off by emergency services as fire officers wait for the cannisters to cool.
Fire crews were called to the site just after 6pm yesterday, after worried Blueline cabbies dialled 999.
Taxi firm bosses could only look on as the fire threatened to spread to their newly refurbished pounds 250,000 car workshop, in the next unit.
The firm’s cars continued to run as normal, despite 50 of their fleet, with a combined value of pounds 250,000, trapped inside the building at the centre of the no-go area.
Fire chiefs have said until the site has had a chance to cool down there is no way of gaining access to begin piecing together how the flames took hold.
Group Manager Anderson said: “The fire is out and we have removed the danger, but until we can get access to the site there is no way of knowing how this fire started.
“Fire officers will stay in situ for 24 hours to keep watch on gas cylinders as they cool. After this period investigators will be able to begin looking at the scene.
“The main workshop area of the factory has been destroyed by the fire, but we were able to save the offices.”
Fisher Street, which runs along the length of the factory was due to remain cordoned off today.
As flames flashed in front of their homes families told of their fears the danger could edge closer to them.
Mum-of-two Sarah Myers, 40, of Woodside Avenue, said: “We started to panic when we saw the flames because we were afraid they would have to move us.
“We don’t know what goes on in there so we were concerned there could be explosive materials inside, or something poisonous in the air.
“The police came and asked us if we’d seen anything suspicious and told us to stay inside. We really were concerned when they told us to keep our doors and windows closed.
“You feel safe when the firemen arrive, but you can’t help but worry when you see what they do.”
Pleurisy sufferer and mum-offour Karen Holland, 41, said: “I don’t know what we would’ve done if we had to move. I can’t leave the house.
“We weren’t worried at first, but then, when the flames started getting bigger and started coming out of the top, you realised how serious it was.”
No-one was injured in the fire. A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: “The area surrounding the building on Fisher Street has been cordoned off. Emergency services were called to the scene.”

Despite companies and businesses that laying off thousands of workers or even shutting their doors in today’s tough economic climate, there is one industry that is thriving and helping thousands of regular people make money , its called affiliate marketing. Some hard workers are even replacing the income they earned at their regular jobs, allowing them to walk away from the 9-5 work day for good and work from home on a full-time basis.
What is this industry? Affiliate marketing.
Affiliate marketing programs are simple by nature: They work by rewarding marketers for promoting products online. The affiliates are then compensated on a commission basis. Basically, affiliates get paid each time they refer new customers to the website of the company they are promoting.
Becoming an affiliate is one of the most lucrative online money-making opportunities out there, and the breadth of products that can be promoted as an affiliate is staggering. Affiliate marketing creates a cost-effective option for big and small companies alike to reach out and expose their products to a much larger audience of potential buyers. Instead of being limited to just one large webiste, companies of any size can now offer an affiliate program and have their products promoted on hundreds or even thousands of individual sites, at no upfront cost to them.
Likewise, the affiliate marketing industry also provides a virtually unlimited source for income for those who aggressively promote offers. Affiliates have been continually reaping the rewards of larger profits as the affiliate marketing industry continues to grow in popularity

UNIX Update, Dec 1, 2009
Novell, Waltham, Mass., has announced the availability of the first commercial solution to facilitate the development of .NET applications for Linux, UNIX and Mac OS X within Microsoft Visual Studio. A revolutionary new add-in module for Microsoft’s Visual Studio integrated development environment (IDE), Mono Tools for Visual Studio allows Microsoft .NET developers to utilize their familiar Visual Studio environment to design, code and maintain multi-platform applications. By significantly reducing the time and costs of multi-platform development, Mono Tools enables corporate developers, independent software vendors (ISVs) and development services providers to quickly and easily expand their market opportunities and deployment options.
“Microsoft Visual Studio is an integrated environment that helps simplify the entire development process from design to deployment,” said Cyrill Glockner, director of Business Development, Platform and Tools, Microsoft Corp. “With the Microsoft Visual Studio Industry Partner program (VSIP), we support the development of tools that seamlessly integrate with Microsoft Visual Studio and help our customers achieve success. Mono Tools for Visual Studio enriches the Visual Studio ecosystem, making it possible for the over six million engineers targeting .NET to gain additional value from their Microsoft tools and skills.”
Mono Tools for Visual Studio is a commercial solution that enables C# and .NET developers trained in Microsoft Visual Studio to stay within their preferred IDE, and use their existing skills and extensive .NET ecosystem of code, libraries and tools to develop or port applications to Linux, UNIX or Mac OS X. Prior to Mono Tools, .NET application porting required developers to invest heavily in learning new programming tools and rewriting/re-architecting applications. With Mono Tools, developers trained in the popular Visual Studio IDE can utilize their existing skills and expertise to build multi-platform applications and identify related issues, isolating and fixing them directly within Visual Studio.
“While Linux presents software vendors with a host of new opportunities, developers familiar with .NET tools can find Linux application development tools challengingly different and unsuitable for their needs,” said Al Hilwa, program director, Application Development Software at IDC

A FERTILITY clinic is out to prove that IVF is not the only solution for couples struggling to have a baby.
The Edinburgh Natural Fertility Clinic has announced its latest success figures which show that a combination of alternative therapies can provide a solution for many women having problems getting pregnant.
They show that 47 per cent of patients who visited the clinic between 2007 and 2008 conceived successfully.
Results also show that people who receive fertility awareness advice are three times more likely to conceive than those who do not.
As well as offering support to couples to help them conceive naturally, the clinic’s figures also show that a range of treatments such as acupuncture, nutritional advice and hypnotherapy can also support the IVF process.
Deirdre Armstrong, who runs the clinic, said: “Many couples are not aware of the effect stress and busy workloads have on their reproductive health.
“By using complementary therapies we look to use an integrated approach to treat fertility problems.”

National Review, Dec 21, 2009 by Thomas M. Sullivan
Stephen Spruiell’s excellent article in the November 23 issue, “Unholy Union,” neglected to mention what I believe is the most important reason that Andy Stern has been the White House’s most frequent visitor. Hearken back to Candidate Obama’s offhand remark to Joe the Plumber that he just wanted to “spread the wealth around.” Now cut to a recent Fox News interview with Stern wherein the union leader flatly stated that one of his principal goals has always been, and remains, the redistribution of wealth in America.
There you go. Stern’s not there proselytizing; he’s just visiting with a kindred spirit.
